Saving 20 litres is easier than you think. Check out these top tips for how you can start saving water today:

Shave a minute off your shower

Swindon residents spend about 8 minutes in the shower. Cutting a minute of your shower can save 7 litres of water every time.
  • Shorter showers save both water and time in the morning! Plus, you’ll be helping tackle climate change.

Turn off the tap

A running tap uses about 4 litres per minute. Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth can save 13 litres a day. When washing and shaving, put the plug in to save even more.
  • Treating and pumping the water you use in a day emits as much CO2 as watching TV for one and a half hours

Stop the drip

A dripping tap can waste more than 3,000 litres of water a year. Make sure you turn off taps fully, or fix drips, and your household could save 9 litres, every day.
  • We’re all doing our bit to save water in Swindon. Last year, Thames Water fixed a leak every eight and half minutes.

Feed your machine – only wash when it’s full

A washing machine can use 55 litres of hot water per cycle. Swindon households on average use theirs 5 times a week. By waiting until you have a full load, your household could save 58 litres a week or 8 litres a day.
  • Reducing hot water use could save you up to £80 on your annual energy bill.

Think twice about the hosepipe

A hosepipe can use as much as 250 litres of water in 15 minutes. Using a watering can instead can save you 225 litres for every 15 minutes you spend watering the garden.
  • If everybody in Swindon takes the 20 litre challenge we could save 4 million litres of water every day - helping to reduce the risk to rivers and the natural environment.
